Modern Day Samaritan Woman

I have recently  joined a group of writers for Five Minute Friday, hosted by Kate Motaung

Every week we write for five minutes after receiving a one word prompt. No editing or over thinking involved….Just writing for the love of writing.

For more information please visit Kate Motaung at Heading Home.

 Five Minute Friday

However, having received the prompt last week and writing my piece, life interrupted and so Friday became Sunday and my piece was never submitted.

I have decided to post it anyhow, but have not linked up this week.

Here goes!!!!

Byron watched Pete sitting at the kitchen table eating bread rolls and cheese. He wished he would hurry up as he waited for his brother and traced the table cover pattern with his sticky little fingers.

He could hear the chickens outside and was dying to get out there to their hideaway to play. He had long finished his lunch but his brother was a slow eater.

After what seemed like forever, Byron slid his chair backwards, while pushing the last bread crust into his mouth and headed for the door. Pete was up in a flash and before long the two brothers had slammed their way out of the house and heading for their favorite part of the garden.

Their hideaway was an old fig tree, that had grown thick barks and lushes leaves as it had forced its way towards the light. Ever competing with the fir tree that had somehow rooted and grown way too close; it was now a sturdy, impressive tree, providing shelter to all sorts of insects and the perfect play area for two young boys.

The boys played all sorts of games, had sword fights and traded treasures until they were thirsty and decided to go invade the pirate’s cove for something to drink.

Climbing down the tree was quick and simple for Pete, with his short stubby body he managed to easily avoid the tangles bark and twigs of the old fig tree, but Byron had to be more careful. His long legs caught on the branches and he had to bend low to get underneath some of the foliage.

Almost all the way to the bottom of the tree, Byron’s shoe lace got caught on some twigs that had grown from the bark and he found that he was stuck. He couldn’t get up again and he couldn’t go down any further.

Panicked he began to call for help and between shouts of help he couldn’t understand where all the “squawking” was coming from.

“What’s the matter with Tequila?” asked Pete’s mother as she came into the kitchen to investigate the commotion.

“I don’t know mom” answered Byron. “He just suddenly started squawking”.

Taking a closer look they found that the bird’s leg ring had somehow become entangled on a chain in his cage.

Meanwhile, Tequila had calmed down, and was munching on a piece of bread crust that Pete had given to him.

He realized he must have dozed off while watching Pete eat, and despite the scare of being stuck, he had, had a lovely dream.

It may have been just a “Dream” but for a few moments Tequila had been Pete’s brother and he had been a little boy playing outside with his most beloved friend ever.

*Hugs* till next time.
